Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup red lentils
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1

Rinse the red lentils under cold water, then combine with water in a saucepan; bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 12 minutes until tender but not mushy.

  2. 2

While the lentils cook, heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.

  3. 3

Stir in cumin, turmeric, and smoked paprika; cook for another 30 seconds to release the spices' aromas.

  4. 4

Add the cooked lentils to the skillet, mash with a potato masher or fork, and stir to combine with the spices; season with salt and black pepper.

  5. 5

Continue cooking for 2–3 minutes, allowing excess moisture to evaporate and the mixture to become creamy; adjust seasoning if needed, then serve hot.
