Ingredients

  • 1 cup Red lentils (Masoor Dal)
  • 3 cups Water
  • 0.5 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil or Ghee
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 inch Ginger, grated
  • 1 medium Tomato, diced(optional)
  • 0.5 teaspoon Garam masala
  • 2 tablespoons Fresh cilantro, chopped(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Rinse the red lentils thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.

  2. 2

In a large pot, combine lentils, water, turmeric, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes until lentils are soft and broken down.

  3. 3

While lentils cook, heat oil or ghee in a small skillet over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for 30 seconds.

  4. 4

Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté until golden brown.

  5. 5

Stir in the garlic and ginger, cooking for another 1 minute until fragrant. Add the diced tomato and cook until softened.

  6. 6

Pour this tempered spice mixture (tadka) into the cooked lentils and stir well.

  7. 7

Stir in the garam masala and simmer for an additional 2 minutes to meld flavors.

  8. 8

Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan.
