How we compare

We're not a meal kit. Stop comparing us to one.

People keep asking how we stack up against HelloFresh and the other meal-kit boxes. Wrong question. HelloFresh ships you a box of ingredients you didn't already buy. Their customer is "I don't want to think AND I want food in a box." Ours is "I have food, tell me what to make." Different jobs.

Competing on convenience-with-shipping is a fight we'd lose and shouldn't pick. The real comparison set is NYT Cooking, Mealime, ChatGPT-as-cookbook, and Samsung Food. We've still put HelloFresh in the table below so you can see the gap.

"Partial" means the app does some version of this but not in a pantry-first way. Feature sets change — last reviewed May 2026.

vs. NYT Cooking

NYT Cooking is a recipe magazine. Beautiful photos, written voice, paid subscription. If you want to read about food, go there. If it's 6pm and you need a dinner answer that uses what's already in your fridge, that's us.

vs. Mealime

Mealime is a meal planner with a fixed recipe library. You pick from their menu, it builds a grocery list. They don't look at your pantry. We do. That's the difference.

vs. ChatGPT-as-cookbook

ChatGPT can write a recipe. It cannot remember the chickpeas in your pantry from last Tuesday, plan your week around them, or send the missing ingredients to Instacart. We're built for the loop ChatGPT can't close.

vs. Samsung Food

Samsung Food is impressive — if you bought a Samsung fridge. We're built for the other 99% of kitchens. A phone is enough.

vs. HelloFresh

HelloFresh ships you a box of pre-portioned ingredients you didn't already buy. That's a delivery service with a recipe card on top. Different customer, different price tag, different week. We don't ship anything. We turn the food on your shelf right now into dinner — and if something's missing, we send the gap to a grocery cart you control. The comparison ends about as fast as it starts.

The lane is "dinner from what you have."
