Ingredients

  • 180 g penne pasta
  • 1 can (400 g) crushed tomatoes
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp salt(optional)
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper(optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh basil (optional)(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the penne according to package directions until al dente, about 10–12 minutes; reserve 1/2 cup pasta water, then drain.

  2. 2

While the pasta cooks, mince the garlic. In a skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil and sauté the garlic with the red pepper flakes for about 30–60 seconds until fragrant (do not brown).

  3. 3

Add the crushed tomatoes to the skillet, season with salt and black pepper, and simmer for about 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.

  4. 4

Add the drained penne to the sauce and toss to coat. If needed, loosen with a splash of reserved pasta water. Simmer and toss for 1–2 minutes, then serve (top with basil if using).
