Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • to taste salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Rinse the red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.

  2. 2

In a saucepan, combine the lentils, water, turmeric, and a pinch of salt; bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 12‑15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the lentils are soft and slightly mushy.

  3. 3

While the dal cooks, heat the ghee or oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for 10 seconds, then add the minced garlic and dried red chilies; fry for another 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.

  4. 4

Pour the hot tempering (tadka) over the cooked dal, stir gently, and let it sit for 1‑2 minutes to meld the flavors.

  5. 5

Garnish with chopped cilantro if desired and serve hot.
