Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup red lentils (masoor dal)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 slices bread (day‑old, any type)
  • 2 cloves garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Rinse the red lentils under cold water, then combine them with 3 cups of water in a pot; bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  2. 2

While the lentils cook, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat, add the minced garlic and toast until golden, then add the bread slices, flipping to toast both sides; remove and cut into bite‑size croutons.

  3. 3

When the lentils are tender, stir in the minced ginger, garam masala, turmeric, and salt; simmer for another 3‑4 minutes to blend flavors.

  4. 4

Serve the soup hot, topped with the garlic croutons and a sprinkle of black pepper if desired.
