Ingredients

  • 450 g Firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons Soy sauce (low-sodium)
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
  • 1 whole Star anise
  • 1 teaspoon Fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Erythritol (optional sweetener)(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Press the tofu: wrap the block in a clean kitchen towel, place a weight on top, and let sit for 8 minutes to remove excess moisture.

  2. 2

Slice the pressed tofu into three even steaks, about 1.5 cm thick.

  3. 3

In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, minced garlic, grated ginger, rice vinegar, star anise, and erythritol if using.

  4. 4

Place the tofu steaks in the glaze, turn to coat all sides, and let marinate for 10 minutes while you pre‑heat the pan.

  5. 5

Heat olive oil in a non‑stick skillet over medium‑high heat; add the tofu steaks and sear 4‑5 minutes per side until golden‑brown and crispy.

  6. 6

Remove the tofu, discard the whole star anise, and drizzle any remaining glaze over the steaks; let rest 2 minutes before serving.
