Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup dry brown lentils
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 pieces soft hamburger buns
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt(optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Heat the olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat (2 minutes). Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3 minutes, then stir in the minced garlic and cook 30 seconds.

  2. 2

Add the dry lentils, garam masala, tomato sauce, vegetable broth, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 15 minutes or until the lentils are tender and the mixture thickens, stirring occasionally.

  3. 3

While the lentil mixture simmers, split the hamburger buns and lightly toast them if desired (optional). Spoon the hot lentil mixture evenly onto the bottom halves of the buns, top with the bun lids, and serve immediately.
