Ingredients

  • 1 cup Red lentils (Masoor Dal)
  • 3 cups Water
  • 0.5 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable oil or Ghee
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 3 cloves Garlic
  • 1 small Onion
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 0.25 cup Fresh cilantro(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Rinse the red lentils thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.

  2. 2

In a large pot, combine lentils, water, and turmeric. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes until lentils are soft and broken down.

  3. 3

While lentils cook, heat oil or ghee in a small skillet over medium heat.

  4. 4

Add cumin seeds to the skillet. Once they sizzle, add finely chopped onion and minced garlic. Sauté until golden brown.

  5. 5

Stir the sautéed aromatics (the 'tadka') into the cooked lentils.

  6. 6

Add salt to taste and simmer for another 2 minutes to meld flavors.

  7. 7

Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan.
