Ingredients

  • 4 slices Sourdough or white bread
  • 4 slices Ham
  • 4 oz Gruyère cheese
  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • 2 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Whole milk
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 pinch Nutmeg(optional)
  • to taste Salt and black pepper(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat the broiler and make the béchamel: melt 2 tbsp butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk in the flour, and cook 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the milk and simmer 3-4 minutes until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

  3. 3

Heat a skillet over medium heat and grill the sandwiches 2-3 minutes per side until golden and the cheese begins to melt.

  4. 4

Place the sandwiches on a baking sheet, spoon the béchamel over the tops, and sprinkle with the remaining Gruyère.

  5. 5

Broil 2-3 minutes until the topping is bubbly and golden. Serve immediately.
