Ingredients
- 4 slices Sourdough or white bread
- 4 slices Ham
- 4 oz Gruyère cheese
- 3 tbsp Butter
- 2 tbsp All-purpose flour
- 1 cup Whole milk
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1/4 tsp Black pepper
- 1 pinch Nutmeg(optional)
Instructions
- 1
Make the béchamel: melt 2 tbsp butter in a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk in the flour, and cook 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the milk and simmer, whisking, until thickened, about 4-5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- 2
Butter the outside of each bread slice. Spread Dijon mustard on the inside of two slices, then layer with ham and half the Gruyère. Top with the remaining slices, buttered side out.
- 3
Heat a skillet over medium heat and grill the sandwiches 3-4 minutes per side until golden and the cheese begins to melt.
- 4
Preheat the broiler. Top each sandwich with the remaining Gruyère and a generous spoonful of béchamel, then broil 2-3 minutes until bubbling and lightly browned. Serve hot.
