Ingredients

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 4 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard(optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon paprika(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook macaroni according to package directions until al dente.

  2. 2

While pasta cooks, melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.

  3. 3

Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux, ensuring it does not brown.

  4. 4

Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps, then simmer until the sauce thickens.

  5. 5

Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the salt, pepper, garlic powder, and ground mustard.

  6. 6

Add the shredded cheddar cheese one handful at a time, stirring until completely melted and smooth.

  7. 7

Drain the cooked macaroni and add it directly into the cheese sauce.

  8. 8

Stir well to coat all the pasta and serve immediately while hot and creamy.
