Ingredients

Servings:6
  • 2 lbs Ground Beef
  • 2 slices White Bread
  • 1 1/2 cups Milk
  • 2 large Onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons Cape Malay Curry Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 3 tablespoons Fruit Chutney (Mrs. Ball's)
  • 1/2 cup Sultanas or Raisins
  • 3 large Eggs
  • 4 pieces Bay Leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Lemon Juice

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and soak the bread slices in half a cup of the milk.

  2. 2

Sauté the onions and garlic in a large pan until soft and golden, then stir in the curry powder and turmeric for one minute.

  3. 3

Add the ground beef to the pan and brown thoroughly, breaking up any large chunks.

  4. 4

Squeeze the excess milk from the bread (reserve the milk), mash the bread, and stir it into the meat along with the chutney, raisins, and lemon juice.

  5. 5

Transfer the meat mixture into a greased baking dish and press it down firmly to create an even surface.

  6. 6

Whisk the remaining milk with the eggs and a pinch of salt, then pour this custard slowly over the meat.

  7. 7

Insert the bay leaves into the custard layer and bake for 30-35 minutes until the topping is set and golden brown.

  8. 8

Serve warm with yellow rice and extra fruit chutney on the side.
