Ingredients

Servings:4
  • 500 grams Ground beef
  • 1 slice White bread slice, soaked in milk and squeezed dry
  • 1 small Yellow onion, finely grated
  • 2 tablespoons Cape Malay curry powder
  • 3 tablespoons Fruit chutney (Mrs. Ball's style)
  • 1/4 cup Sultanas or raisins
  • 3 units Large eggs
  • 3/4 cup Whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric
  • 4 units Dried bay leaves
  • 1 teaspoon Salt and black pepper

Instructions

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and lightly grease a medium-sized baking dish.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, soaked bread, grated onion, 1 tablespoon of curry powder, chutney, raisins, one egg, salt, and pepper.

  3. 3

Mix the meat mixture thoroughly by hand and roll into golf-ball sized meatballs.

  4. 4

Place the meatballs in the prepared baking dish and bake for 15 minutes to brown slightly.

  5. 5

While meatballs bake, whisk together the remaining 2 eggs, milk, turmeric, and the remaining tablespoon of curry powder to create the custard.

  6. 6

Remove the dish from the oven and pour the egg custard mixture over and around the meatballs.

  7. 7

Tuck the bay leaves into the custard and return the dish to the oven for another 15-20 minutes until the custard is set and golden.

  8. 8

Serve hot over yellow turmeric rice with extra chutney on the side.
