Ingredients
- 1 pound Fresh okra, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
- 1 cup Buttermilk
- 1 cup Yellow cornmeal
- 0.5 cup All-purpose flour
- 0.5 teaspoon Cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Onion powder
- 1 teaspoon Smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 0.5 teaspoon Black pepper
- 2 cups Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- 1
Place the sliced okra in a medium bowl and pour the buttermilk over it, stirring to ensure every piece is well coated.
- 2
In a separate large bowl or a gallon-sized resealable plastic bag, combine the cornmeal, flour, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- 3
Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- 4
Using a slotted spoon, remove the okra from the buttermilk in batches, letting the excess liquid drip off.
- 5
Toss the okra in the cornmeal mixture until each piece is thoroughly and evenly breaded.
- 6
Carefully place the breaded okra into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- 7
Fry for 3 to 5 minutes, turning occasionally, until the okra is golden brown and crispy.
- 8
Remove the okra with a slotted spoon and drain on a plate lined with paper towels; serve immediately while hot.
