In a large bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until well combined.
In a separate small bowl, stir together the buttermilk, beaten egg, and grated onion.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just moistened.
Fold in the shredded sharp cheddar cheese and minced jalapeños until evenly distributed through the batter.
Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy skillet or Dutch oven to 365 degrees Fahrenheit.
Drop the batter by rounded tablespoonfuls into the hot oil, being careful not to crowd the pan.
Fry the hush puppies for 2 to 3 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown on all sides.
Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels before serving warm.
