Ingredients

Servings:8
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup Salted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1 teaspoon Baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Ground nutmeg
  • 1 piece Large egg
  • 1/2 cup Evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 liter Vegetable oil for deep frying
  • 2 tablespoons Water(optional)

Instructions

  1. 1

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and ground nutmeg until well combined.

  2. 2

Add the chilled cubed butter to the flour mixture and rub it in using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

  3. 3

In a separate small bowl, beat the egg with the evaporated milk and vanilla extract.

  4. 4

Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients, pour in the wet mixture, and knead until a smooth, stiff dough forms; add a splash of water if too dry.

  5. 5

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.

  6. 6

Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut the dough into small 1/2 inch squares or rectangles.

  7. 7

Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C) and fry the dough pieces in batches until they are golden brown and crunchy.

  8. 8

Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels; let them cool completely to reach maximum crunchiness.
